WHEN MY NAME WAS KEOKO
BY: LINDA SUE PARK
SUMMARY BY: VALERIA NARVAEZ
The title of the book that I read was When My Name Was Keoko. Written by: Linda Sue Park.
The time of the story was in the time of the Second World War. Keoko is a Korean boy, he is ten
years old. He lives with all his family, cousins, parents, grandmother etc. His uncle has a store that
prints the Korea’s news paper. When the world war started, the Koreans need it to start to adapt
to the Japanese’s culture. So they need it to change their Korean names, to a Korean name.
Keoko’s name was change to Tae Yul.
At school, the students have war preparation instead of classes. When all this change
happened, the Koreans need it to be 100% of a Japan, they couldn’t have anything of Korea, even
a simple flag, because I not the militaries would come and take them to a kind of jail. Also in that
time, the Olympics were in Japan. Because of all of this change, the Japanese’s judges of the
games were very unfair, with the Koreans and they only gave points to the Japanese. Tea Yul’s
uncle was very mad, so he decided to protest for that. He went and took a Korean flag, and went
out of the house and started to run with it. Fortunately no one saw him. Uncle was so sad and
disagreed with all of this that he went away. Now Tea Yul was in charge of the store.
He was so intelligent, that he teaches all the Koreans, Kanji, the alphabet of the Japanese. The
only thing that the Koreans wanted was to be again Koreans and no Japanese. A few weeks later,
in the news appeared that the Japanese’s had attacked Europe. And in a corner of the newspaper,
it appears the following: “We have a new integrated person in the military group”. That new
integrated person was uncle. For Tea Yul, that was very sad.
After that, Tea Yul was in charge of the store. He started to maintain his family, because uncle
was the one that maintained it, but now that he was gone. The only thing that the Koreans
wanted was to be again Koreans and no Japanese.
